Veganuary Wrapped: Useful tips for labelling your Vegan Products

Finally, the end of what always feels like the longest month of the year! January is branded a month of beginnings and New Year resolutions, maybe the start of a fitness journey, dry Jan perhaps, or going vegan for the whole month! If you have continued with Veganuary into the rest of the year, we have some sweet recommendations…

What is Veganuary?

Veganuary, founded by the non-profit organisation in 2014, is an annual challenge in the UK which encourages people to follow the vegan diet for January. Since then, its popularity has increased. Hundreds of thousands of people sign up to participate every year, citing reasons including health benefits, reducing animal cruelty and climate change.

To coincide with the campaign, supermarkets and restaurants release new products and menu items encouraging the consumption of a vegan diet.

How can I tell if a product is vegan?

Food packaging labels are so important. They provide necessary information, such as an ingredient list and allergen details, for safe and informed purchasing and consumption of food.

Different variations of internationally recognised vegan and vegetarian V-labels are displayed on products. These labels verify that the ingredients within the product adhere to a specific vegan or vegetarian-friendly diet.

Legally, all manufacturers of processed food products should state allergens in bold in the ingredients list on the product packaging. Many of the common non-vegan ingredients - Milk, Egg, Dairy, Shellfish - will be noted at the bottom of this ingredients list, making it easy to spot if the product is vegan-friendly. It is always best to scan your eyes over the labels, as companies can change their recipes and ingredients used..

Useful additions to your Vegan product packaging

With supermarket shelves stocked full of fantastic products, it is important that your packaging stands out and includes the correct information for your potential customer.

Adding a separate label stating a product is vegan will make it more convenient for the consumer as they can see that the product is safe to buy without having to read the ingredients list on the back. We suggest our High Gloss Paper Labels. These labels are certified as food-safe and look fantastic on packaging when used to brag about the product!

Ensure your ingredients list is compliant with government guidelines. Under Natasha’s Law, you must list all the ingredients on individual packaging of products that are considered pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS). By listing all ingredients, your customers can be reassured that their food is in line with their dietary requirements.

Flexi Labels Vegan Customer Spotlight - TruPig Vegan

While Veganuary may be ending for many of us, for some, it’s a lifestyle! We work with many vegan-friendly businesses that support veganism all year round, not just in January.

One of our loyal customers, TruPig Vegan, is a great example! Business owners Lily and Ian are a vegan couple who create delicious, sweet treats while keeping animal welfare at the heart of their production. Their multi-award-winning chocolate goodies are made in a kitchen in Kelham Island, Sheffield.

At Flexi Labels, we love the TruPig artwork, and we’ve been working with them regularly since 2020 to ensure their labels are bold across all products. They order printed and plain, sheet and roll labels with us for use on packaging, address labels and on their products.

Co-founder Ian says, “The Flexi Label range has been useful for upgrading our packaging and branding. As well as custom-printed labels we also use blank labels so that we can print things as and when required”.

Vegan or not, we’d encourage everyone to look at TruPig’s social links below and website where you can pore over their mouthwatering selection of treats and oggle their fantastic branding. Their pre-orders for Limited Edition Valentine's Day treats have just closed (no!), but keep an eye out on their feeds as there is usually something egg-citing in the pipeline for Easter.
